1. An artistic style that speaks to you

Every portrait photographer looks at the world a little differently. When you’re browsing galleries online, don’t just look for pretty pictures; look for consistency in how they shoot and edit the photos.

  • Do you love bright, classic, true-to-life color? Or are you drawn more to a dark, moody look? There will always be a little variety in every portfolio; each client is unique and wants something slightly different from everyone else. But make sure the overall portfolio of any photographer you're considering matches what you want to hang on your walls.
  • If you have your heart set on a gorgeous outdoor sunset session, look for a photographer who highlights plenty of natural light photography, rather than just in-studio setups. For instance, I tend use a lot of natural light but also use off-camera flash to fill in when the natural light isn't enough or when my clients request a specific look.
  • A great wedding or product photographer might not have the patience to handle a chaotic family session or have any tricks up their sleeve to make a shy teenager laugh. Look for someone who specializes in the specific type of shoot you need.

2. Reviews that mention the experience

Technical skill is important, but it's only half the battle. The other half is how the photographer makes you feel. Let’s face it, most of us can be a little camera-shy the moment a big lens is pointed at us!

  • Look for client reviews that talk about how relaxed, easy, and fun the photo shoot was.
  • You want someone who gives clear, gentle posing guidance so you never have to ask, "What do I do with my hands?"
  • We all know someone with tons of talent, but who struggles with staying organized and being on time. Finding a photographer with a solid reputation for being punctual, responsive, and genuinely helpful means you never have to stress about whether they'll show up or deliver what they promised, when they promised.

3. Straightforward photography packages and pricing

There is nothing worse than falling in love with a photographer, booking a session, and then finding out later that digital files or custom prints cost a fortune extra.

  • A true professional is transparent about their pricing from the start. Look for straightforward, all-inclusive photography packages so you know exactly what your investment covers before you ever say "cheese."

4. Open communication and session planning

Great portrait sessions don't just happen by accident. They take a little collaboration.

  • Look for a photographer who communicates openly and helps you prepare before the day of your session—whether that’s sending over a helpful outfit guide, suggesting the best locations, or talking through your ideas so you feel completely ready.
